Construction Industry Skills Focus

Following a short AGM and presentation from the Chair of the Club, RDT's Richard Tavener, we were delighted to welcome three speakers:-

Mark Reynolds, Chairman and CEO of Mace and Skills Leader for the Construction Leadership Council
Celeste Jones, Executive Director, University Campus St. Albans (UCSA)
Teddy Kye-Nyarko, Head of Construction, Bedford College Group

The key point that came out of discussions was how we 'need to rethink and refocus on construction given the last 20 months'.

Four areas to consider:

Improve access and attractiveness of the construction industry to drive more people and diversity into construction. More primary and secondary education to make these career choices.

Boost routes into the industry. Improve links from FE and HE and employers. Grow the number of apprenticeship - government, academia and industry.

Competence - Develop higher technical qualifications to support progression. H&S and modern standards and qualifications to deliver skills our industry needs in the future.

Skills for modern industry; MMC; digital skills; net zero and energy innovation.

The following organisations and portals were noted for construction jobs and help:

- Go Construct
- Talent View
- Government apprenticeship website
- Kickstart scheme
- CITB
- CLC

A recording of the event is available for those who were unable to attend as well as copies of the presentations. Please contact marion@rdtarchitects.co.uk for a copy or for further details about joining the Herts & Beds CE Club.
