Garden City Court Care Home

It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years since we completed the Garden City Court Care Home in Letchworth Garden City for @HertsCountyCouncil and @QuantumCare. This award-winning, 75-bedroom dementia care home and day centre was built on a 2-acre site that formerly housed a primary school.

RDT Architects played a key role from the initial feasibility and planning stages through to the construction phase, where we were retained as design advisors and later appointed by @ISG for detailed design services. The purpose-built facility features a communal hub with a café/bistro, hair salon, shops, and care support facilities, and it was one of the first care homes to achieve a #BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.

The design emphasises a sense of ownership and privacy, with each residential wing divided into household groups of 7 or 8 residents. This project earned us several accolades, including ‘Architect of the Year’ at the Herts Building & Construction Awards and ‘SME of the Year’ at the Constructing Excellence Awards, as well as a commendation from the Hertfordshire Association of Architects.

We are proud that this project paved the way for further collaborations with Hertfordshire County Council on other care home and residential masterplan projects, including Broxbourne Nursing Home and Little Furze Care Home.
